Striving for Excellence

David R. Stephens

Founder and Clinical Director

Licensed Professional Counselor- Supervisor and Board/National Certified Counselor

David R. Stephens is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S), National Certified Counselor (NCC), and scientist-practitioner with more than 23 years of clinical experience. He specializes in the evidence-based treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), intrusive thoughts, and anxiety-related conditions.

David's clinical philosophy is grounded in the scientist-practitioner model, integrating the latest findings in psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral medicine into practical, individualized treatment. He believes that effective counseling should be guided not only by compassion and clinical experience but also by rigorous scientific evidence. His goal is to bridge the gap between research and real-world clinical practice, providing clients with the most effective tools available to achieve meaningful, lasting change.

As part of his ongoing research interests, David is currently studying the relationship between sleep and OCD, with a particular focus on the role of glutamate, the brain's primary excitatory neurotransmitter. His work explores how sleep quality, neurobiology, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms interact, with the goal of improving treatment outcomes through a deeper understanding of the underlying neuroscience.

David is a graduate of the International OCD Foundation's Behavioral Therapy Training Institute (BTTI), where he received specialized training in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard treatment for OCD. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Behavioral Health, further strengthening his commitment to integrating scientific research with clinical excellence.

David believes that although every individual faces unique challenges, everyone possesses the capacity to build a meaningful, fulfilling, and rewarding life. He views the counseling relationship as a collaborative partnership founded on trust, respect, and shared goals. By combining empirically supported interventions with practical, personalized strategies, he works alongside clients to help them overcome obstacles, develop resilience, and reach their fullest potential.

A lifelong resident of Huntsville, Alabama, David has had the privilege of serving the community through work with respected organizations, including the Madison County District Attorney's Office and the National Children's Advocacy Center. His commitment to service extends beyond his clinical practice through volunteer work with organizations such as Hospice Family Care and the American Cancer Society. He is inspired by the words of Kahlil Gibran:
"You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give."

Outside the office, David enjoys studying Philosophy, collecting vintage Star Wars memorabilia, cycling, professional development, and continually exploring new advances in behavioral science. He also holds a Black Belt in martial arts and previously served as a part-time martial arts instructor. In addition, he serves his community as an Emergency Medical Responder with his local volunteer fire department, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others both inside and outside the counseling office.

“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”
